Unique Vizcaya: But people are sometimes the most fascinating tricksters. Look at what industrialist James Deering did with his Vizcaya home (3251 South Miami Avenue; tel: 305-250-9133; www.vizcayamuseum.org). This opulent, 70-room Renaissance-style palazzo on Biscayne Bay displays almost every artistic style that Western man produced, from the AD200 altar to the 1915 gold plumbing fixtures. The formal gardens are bizarrely beautiful and the barge in the harbor is made of stone, a sculpture by A. Stirling Calder, less mobile than the works done later by his son Alexander. An afternoon spent here really is a treat.

In 1925, St Bernard's Monastery (16711 West Dixie Highway, off Biscayne Boulevard) was shipped from Segovia in Spain stone by num
bored stone - in 11,000 crates. It had been bought by William Randolph Hearst, who intended to use it to house a swimming pool on his estate in California (for more information, click here). Lastly, the Holocaust Memorial (Meridian Avenue and Dade Boulevard; www.holocaustmemorialmiamibeach.org) features a sculptural tribute to the Holocaust's 6 million victims, The Sculpture of Love and Anguish. Forged by sculptor Kenneth Treister, this devastating 42ft (13m) high bronze arm bears an Auschwitz tattoo number and smaller bronze figures scaling its surface. Combining historical exhibits, photographs, and other sculptural monuments, the memorial prompts an elegiac moment of quiet reflection.
